Dr. James Coffman is a Licensed Clinical Pastoral Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor (Mental Health
Service Provider), and Licensed Marital and Family Therapist with over 30 years of experience. He maintains an independent practice at Coffman Farm near Ripley, Tennessee—located within one hour of most communities in West Tennessee and the Missouri Boothill—and manages Pastoral Counseling Mid-South at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Memphis. He holds a Doctor of Ministry from Vanderbilt University, where he specialized in pastoral counseling and marital therapy, along with Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of Arts from Union University.
Dr. Coffman specializes in individual, couples, and family therapy, addressing anxiety, depression, marital conflict, loss of connection, sexual impasses, adjustment and stress disorders, communication issues, and grief complications. With particular expertise in anxiety and affect disorders, he has worked with couples across all developmental phases. His psychodynamic, spiritually integrated approach draws from existential psychotherapy, systems theory, and cognitive and behavioral theories to offer personalized care.
As a leader in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Dr. Coffman has provided consultation to pastoral counseling centers nationwide. He is the founding Executive Director of the Pastoral Counseling and Consultation Centers of Tennessee, now Insight Counseling Centers in Nashville, and received the 25th Anniversary Founders Award. A popular referral resource for clergy, physicians, and attorneys, he offers human resource and management consultation, employee and congregation assistance programs, and leadership training for nonprofits, and is available to speak on marriage and family life, communications, grief, change, and spirituality.
Dr. Coffman has served as pastor in Kentucky, Missouri, and North Carolina; College Counselor at Berea College; and chaplain in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. His academic appointments include Lecturer in Pastoral Theology at Vanderbilt University Graduate School and Adjunct Professor at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary and Memphis Theological Seminary. He is a Diplomate of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, a Certified Supervisor with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, and an Endorsed Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor, Pastoral Counselor, and Chaplain with the Alliance of Baptists.
